Cream together shortening and sugar. Add one egg at a time, beating well
after each addition. Sift together flour, salt and soda; add to creamed
mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with buttermilk.
Add vanilla and blend well. Pour half the batter mixture into a well
greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Add chocolate syrup to remaining
batter and mix. Pour chocolate mixture over top of other batter and fold
in gently with spatula for a marble effect. Bake at 350 degrees for one
hour and 10 minutes. Cool on wire cake rack. Frost as desired.
