Amish Friendship Bread

The day you receive 1 cup of starter your friend will advise you which day of the instructions to begin. Note: DO NOT USE METAL BOWL OR SPOON - DO NOT REFRIGERATE. DAY 1 - Do nothing. DAY 2 - Mush the bag. DAY 3 - Mush the bag. DAY 4 - Mush the bag. DAY 5 - Mush the bag. DAY 6 - Add to the bag 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, & 1 cup milk. DAY 7 - Mush the bag. DAY 8 - Mush the bag. DAY 9 - Mush the bag. DAY 10 - Add 1 1/2 cup flour, 1 1/2 cup sugar, & 1 1/2 cup milk and make the Amish Friendship Bread. First pour off three 1 cup starters. Save one for yourself and give the other to 2 friends.

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 lg. box instant vanilla pudding

Mix together:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  • Grease 2 loaf pans or spray with Pam. If desired, dust pans with some of sugar/cinnamon mixture and swirl the rest into batter after pouring into pans. Or you can swirl all of it into batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans onto wire racks to cool. It freezes really well.
  • Start over with instructions for day 1.

Notes

You can substitute any amount (and up to the full cup) of oil with applesauce.
Whole wheat flour may be substituted for plain flour (all or half and half).
Add 1/2 to 1 cup of dried fruit (Craisins, raisins, dates, apricots, etc.), coconut, or chopped nuts.
